The medical research chair program is part of a major research chair project recently launched by King Saud University reflecting its goals to establish and support research as a strategic investment area in the near future. These medical research chairs are funded and regulated through the university, as part of the general research chairs projects. The term of any medical chair is no less than four years with the possibility for second term renewal based on the general performance and achievements of the research chair.

The medical research chair program

Research chairs are important tools used to enrich and achieve important goals aiming to establish research as a culture within the university, and later within the society and the resultant impact of this on sustaining local research and uplifting other support services like education and health care planning and delivery.

Along with King Saud University’s general strategic plan through its vision and mission to improve the quality of higher education and to establish a true partnership with the society, the medical research chair program fits as an essential pillar in this plan.

Based on the widespread of peripheral vascular diseases in Saudi Arabia and the identified  care, action and knowledge gaps in managing patients with these diseases, Peripheral Vascular Disease Research Chair was one of the first medical research chairs that have been approved by King Saud University to lead the Peripheral Vascular Disease  health care research in Saudi Arabia.

The objectives of the Peripheral Vascular Disease Research Chair include;

  • Perform clinical and basic science research in the field of peripheral vascular diseases (Peripheral Atherosclerotic Diseases such as Peripheral Arterial Disease, Diabetic Foot, Carotid Artery Stenosis; Aortic and Peripheral Aneurysms; and Chronic Venous Insufficiency).
  • Bridge the basic science understanding of peripheral vascular diseases with bedside treatment strategies in patients.
  • Establish collaborative relationships with internationally recognized researchers and medical research institutions.
  • Provide consultations for various medical institutions locally and internationally.
  • Educate the care givers and the public about peripheral vascular diseases.
  • Establish educational research programs for postgraduate students.
  • Support the health strategic planning in Saudi Arabia.
